Henry J. Friedman, M.D. is a psychoanalyst in private practice in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is on the Editorial Board of The Psychoanalytic Quarterly and the International Journal of Self Psychology and a member of the Program Committee of the APsaA. He has written in support of the need for change in the practice of psychoanalysis with regard to both theory and technique recognizing the negative legacy that our past and in particular our methods of training have had on the freedom with which psychoanalysts work with patients. His latest paper is entited: When Interpretation Derails the Patient: The negative impact of certain misuses of the concept of the Unconscious. He is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School and on the staff of the Cambridge Hospital. Theodore J. Jacobs, M.D. is a psychoanalyst in New York City. He is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York University School of Medicine; Training and Supervising Analyst, New York and New York University Psychoanalytic Institutes; Supervising Child Analyst, New York University Psychoanalytic Institute, Columbia Psychoanalytic Center; and Geographic supervising analyst, Minnesota and Miami Psychoanalytic Institutes. He is the author of "The Use of the Self: Countertransference and Communication in the Psychoanalytic Situation" and co-author of "On Beginning an Analysis." Sitting on the Editorial Boards of Psychoanalytic Quarterly; Psychoanalytic Inquiry; International Journal of Infant, Child, and Adult Psychotherapy; Journal of Clinical Psychoanalysis; he cites acquainting the audience with the role of the analyst’s inner experiences in listening to patients, and demonstrating how the analyst’s inner experiences enhance his ability to understand and interpret unconscious mental processes, among his editorial objectives.
